How can the fight between countries for energy resouces be prevented? What can be done?

I think the key is diversity. If we have a variety of energy sources with a variety of places where fuels come from that would help diffuse tensions. Of course, efficiency and renewables (where they can be used) help as well. In addition, new energy generation (fusion?) and management technologies (cheaper superconductors?) would be helpful as well.
